M.Sc Biotechnology

About The Department

Biotechnology is at the forefront of the knowledge economy. In its broadest sense, the commercial exploitation of living organisms or their components. Traditionally, these technologies have encompassed industrial microbiology and dealt with ancient processes such as the brewing industries or the microbial production of cheese, beer, vinegar and yoghurt. In the last few years there has been a new avalanche of genetic and protein information that has become available with equally impressive advances in transgenic and animal cloning technologies.

In this light, biotechnology has broadened its scope and is poised to make significant impacts on our health, nutrition and the interaction with our environment. Biotechnology embraces the new plant and animal transgenic technologies, and the recombinant DNA techniques now used routinely to introduce precise and specific improvements in all the living organisms.

The undergraduate program emphasize on a strong grounding in the biological and engineering basis of biotechnology, as well as the new technologies. Instruction is provided in the areas of Fermentation Technology, aspects of Medical Biotechnology, Down-stream Processing, and Microbial biotechnology, Bio-Nano technological, Plant and Animal Biotechnology. And a wider appreciation of the social, legal and ethical place of biotechnology in society.

VISION

To produce competent biotechnologists who can influence the existing paradigm of agriculture, industry, healthcare and restoration of environment and innovatively providing solutions for sustainable development and societal needs.

BioTechnology

MISSION

• To impart sustainable technological education to generate highly qualified individuals.
• To instill the spirit of innovation and up gradation of technology with high research competence in the fields of agriculture, industry, healthcare, entrepreneurship and environmental remediation.
• To enrich value based socio-ethical implications.

CARRIER OPPORTUNITIES

CARRIER CARRIER Description

BIOPHARMACEUTICALS QUALITY CONTROL OFFICER

A quality control inspector is responsible for monitoring the quality of incoming and outgoing products for manufacturing companies. Quality control inspectors, also called quality controllers (QC) are members of a control audit team that examine manufacturing processes and operational techniques.

QUALITY ANALYZER

A quality analyst is responsible for testing the components and overall functionality of a product. This testing happens with a core intention to guarantee that the product meets the organization’s compliance standards and common practices

PRODUCTION, R&D FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF VACCINES AND THERAPEUTICS

Generally, the R&D process includes basic and translational research, in addition to medicines and vaccine development: Basic research: Investigates the biological underpinnings of disease and potential therapeutic targets.

FERMENTED PRODUCTS: PROCESS DEVELOPER

Fermentation technology is widely used to produce a variety of economically important compounds and has been used in the energy production, pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries.

UPSTREAM, ASSAY DEVELOPMENT

Upstream bioprocessing is the first phase of the bioprocess from cell line development and cultivation to culture expansion of the cells through harvest. Upstream bioprocessing has made great productivity gains over the last decade.

DOWNSTREAM, R&D

Upstream costs, such as research and development costs, occur when a company prepares to start its production process. Downstream costs, such as shipping costs, occur during the process of delivering the products to the customers.

RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Research scientists conduct laboratory-based experiments and trials and work in many fields including medicine, political science, computer science, and environmental science. They plan and conduct experiments that become topics of research papers and reports.

RESEARCH POSITIONS IN SEVERAL GOVT. INSTITUTES AND PRIVATE COMPANIES

Government research officers work for the departments of central government – e.g. housing, economic, environment and development. They conduct research and manage research projects using a range of methodologies.

TEACHING POSTS IN COLLEGES

College Instructor, College English Teachers, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, across a range of subjects and academic disciplines. President, Vice President, Provost, Dean and Chancellor.

HIGH SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES

Colleges can be independent higher education institutions, they can refer to departments making up a university, or they can be high schools in certain European countries. Some universities refer to themselves as colleges for historical/traditional reasons – research them to be sure.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN INDIA AND ABROAD

Fellowships in India are meant to encourage students in the field of research. Unlike scholarships, which offer financial assistance for school and college levels of education, fellowships offer financial aid to students to get ahead in their careers after completing their graduation or post-graduation.

JOBS IN GENETIC REPOSITORIES

Geneticists research aspects of heredity – inherited traits passed down through generations – and use their knowledge to advise others. Geneticists study genes and the science of heredity. This is a fast-moving field in which research features heavily.

STEM CELL COLLECTION AND STORAGE

Cord blood banking is a process of collecting potentially life-saving stem cells from the umbilical cord and placenta and storing them for future use. Stem cells are immature cells that can assume the form of other cells. There are so many things to think about when you have a child.

GENETIC AND IMMUNOLOGICAL DIAGNOSTICS

Introduction. Genetics is the study of the inherited differences between individuals, whereas Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against the huge variety of pathogenic microorganisms it may encounter.

JUNIOR/SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW/PROJECT ASSISTANT/ PROJECT ASSOCIATE/ TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

However, a research fellow often works on a project-by-project basis under the supervision of a senior scholar, and the projects are funded by a federal or private research grant or endowment. A research associate is generally on the payroll, has a formal job description, and works full-time.

RESEARCH POSTS IN AGRICULTURE

Agricultural research can be broadly defined as any research activity aimed at improving productivity and quality of crops by their genetic improvement, better plant protection, irrigation, storage methods, farm mechanization, efficient marketing, and a better management of resources.

ADMINISTRATIVE POSTS IN GOVERNMENT AND NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS

Administrative work involves organizing and supervising an organization or institution.

CONSULTANCY FOR FARMERS, STUDENTS, ENTREPRENEURS:

An entrepreneurial consultant is a business owner who provides expert advice in a particular field or industry. (More on this in the next section the article) If you're a knowledge worker, an entrepreneurial companies.
